Forcing a smile I say, "Just got them settled."

My mother claps her hands saying, "Good. Let's go see them! Hilda and I have been anxiously waiting for you to bring them home."

Looking at Hilda I say, "Kate is tired and the baby is sleeping. Now is not the best time."

Hilda picks up on my mood and suggests helpfully, "Maybe after lunch we can visit."

Mum looks at me sternly saying, "Don't tell me you are trying to still keep me away from my first and only grandchild!"

Sighing I say, "Mum, Kate needs time this morning. She doesn't look like she slept much last night. She needs to rest so she can look after your first and only grandchild." I use her exact words to get my point across.
